Do beauty standards from history and cultures reflect the relativity of beauty?
Beauty standards found in different cultures from around the world may be viewed as "ugly" or "strange" to most people. However, they were once the most beautiful and desired looks. Unibrows, seen as ugly in western culture, is a symbol of beauty and attractiveness in Tajikistan, S.I #10. Lip plates and bold headdresses are common in Kenya, S.I #14. If something is viewed as extremely beautiful in one culture, yet ugly in another, it proves the relativity of beauty.

I experimented with fabric S.I #5 to synthesize the historical dress. However, fabric did not further my inquiry. I chose to watercolor and collage maps, which helped further my investigation by focusing on historical and cultural regions. My usage of the maps helped guide my question by showing the importance of the culture and location that the beauty standard came from. The shading and burnishing of colored pencils was used to show skin pigmentation and the texture of the cultural dress. I practiced colored pencil techniques of shading, burnishing, scumbling, hatching, and directional lines
